Who strings your racquet

Your racquet is strung by Matt, Jeremy or Jason, our three main stringers. Between them they have around 40 years of stringing experience, and our team includes stringers who work at the Australian Open and the US Open each year.

Jeremy is part of the Yonex stringing team at the Australian Open, where he strings for top seeded players. In 2023 he became the first Australian stringer invited to work at Wimbledon in 15 years. When he is not at a Slam, he is here at the shop.

Matt is also a qualified tennis coach, so he strings with the way you play in mind. Jason has been part of the Serving Aces team for seven years.

The same machines as the Australian Open

We string on Yonex Precision 9.0 machines, the same model used in the Australian Open stringing room. The machine holds the frame and pulls an exact tension. Everything else, from the weaving to the knots, is done by hand, which is why the person stringing matters as much as the machine.

How it works

  1. Bring your racquet in during opening hours.
  2. Tell us your string and tension. If you are not sure, have a quick chat with one of our stringers about how you play.
  3. Collect it, usually the next day.

You can also pay for your restring online before you drop it in.

Choosing a string

Comfort and feel. Multifilament and natural gut strings are soft on the arm and hold tension well. A good choice if you have elbow or shoulder soreness, or play a touch game.

Spin and control. Polyester strings let big hitters swing hard and keep the ball in. They are firmer and lose tension faster, so they suit regular players who restring often.

Durability. If you break strings every few weeks, a thicker gauge or a tougher string will last longer.

Hybrids. A poly in one direction and a softer string in the other gives you some spin and control without the harsh feel.

We stock strings from Babolat, Luxilon, Yonex, Head, Wilson and Volkl. Browse the tennis strings range, read our full guide to tennis strings explained, or ask in store. Got a sore arm? See our guide to the best racquets and strings for tennis elbow.

What tension should I use?

Lower tension gives you more power and comfort. Higher tension gives you more control. Most players sit in the middle of the range printed on their frame, then adjust from there. Melbourne weather plays a part too: on hot days the ball flies, so some players go a little tighter, and in the cold a little looser helps with power.

How often should I restring?

A common rule of thumb is to restring as many times a year as you play each week. If you use polyester, restring more often, because it loses tension well before it breaks. Strings that keep moving out of place, a dull feel or a ball that suddenly flies long are all signs it is time.

Where our players come from

We restring for players right across Melbourne's north and west, including Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Ascot Vale, Flemington, Kensington, Aberfeldie, Strathmore, Pascoe Vale, Brunswick, Coburg, Niddrie, Keilor East, Maribyrnong and Footscray. We are on Mt Alexander Road, on the route 59 tram line.
